Salary Guide

At The Nanny Collective, we believe in fair, transparent pay for all nannies - and we’re here to help you understand what to expect when budgeting for your childcare.

This guide outlines average gross salaries for professional nannies in Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. All figures are based on current trends in 2025 and reflect experienced, fully vetted nannies.

Please note: These figures are for gross pay, not net. As part of our #GoGross commitment, we always discuss salary in gross terms to ensure clarity for both families and nannies.

Full-Time Nannies (30+ hours/week)

    •    Average gross hourly rate: £15–£18/hour

    •    Ideal for families looking for consistent care across 4–5 full days

    •    May include nursery duties like cooking, organising play, and light household tasks - depending on the nanny’s experience and your preferences

Part-Time Nannies (Under 30 hours/week)

    •    Average gross hourly rate: £15–£18/hour

    •    Ideal for families needing school pick-ups, wraparound care, or short working weeks

    •    Some part-time nannies are open to cooking and light household duties - we’ll clarify preferences during your consultation

Temporary Nannies & Holiday Cover

    •    £18–£22/hour (gross) depending on experience and notice period

    •    Includes travel nannies, ad-hoc help, or cover for regular nanny leave

Maternity Nurses & Night Nannies

    •    Maternity nurses: £200–£250 per 24 hours (gross)

    •    Night nannies: £18–£22 per hour (gross, usually 9–12 hour shifts)

These rates reflect specialist experience, particularly with newborns and postnatal support.

Gross vs Net Salary – What’s the Difference?

We strongly support the #GoGross campaign, which encourages all families and nannies to agree salaries before tax (gross). This creates transparency and avoids confusion about what’s actually being paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the average nanny salary in Hertfordshire?

Nanny salaries typically range from £15–£18 per hour for live-out roles, depending on experience, hours, and location. We’ll help you find the perfect match for your needs and budget.

Do I need to pay my nanny for holidays?

Yes - nannies are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday per year (pro rata).

Are live-in nannies more expensive than live-out?

Not necessarily. Live-in nannies may have a lower hourly rate due to accommodation being provided, but the total cost can vary depending on the role.

What other costs should I consider?

Beyond salary, you may need to cover pension contributions, National Insurance, payroll setup, and DBS checks.
